20 days after goalkeeper sensationally Anatoliy Trubin glanced a 98th-minute header past Thibaut Courtois to send Benfica through to the Champions League knockout phase playoffs on goal difference, Real Madrid return reluctantly to Estadio da Luz braced for another bout of Jose Mourinho-tinged madness.
It's easy to forget that moments before Trubin's heroics, Kylian Mbappe had perfectly legitimate goal – one that would have completed a hat-trick – chalked off because he'd caught both Trubin and the referee off-guard. It set off a jaw-dropping chain of events that also included a Rodrygo red that reduced Los Blancos to nine men. Raul Asencio had earlier capped a horrendous individual display with an early shower.
Both players are suspended for Tuesday's clash, which may turn out to be a blessing in disguise in Asencio's case. The Spaniard was targeted to great effect by the Eagles, who romped to a 4-2 victory on the day. It was one of Alvaro Arbeloa's first games in charge, though the ship appears to have steadied since his rough start.
Madrid have won four of their past five in all competitions, and in Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, they're spearheaded by the most devastating attacking duo in the Champions League this season. However, nobody has been more vulnerable on the break, and Jude Bellingham's absence is unlikely to help in that regard.
Mourinho famously prefers clean sheets to goal, but he'll have a job on his hands explaining that to two-goal star Andreas Schjelderup. The Norwegian youngster will be keen to reenact the night of his life, and against a Madrid backline as porous as this one, he should well try his luck.
