Thumped 48-7 by England in Twickenham and crushed 54-12 by France in Cardiff, it’s been a demoralizing start to the Six Nations for Wales. And things don’t get any easier for Steve Tandy’s charges as they welcome a Scotland side riding high after a memorable victory over England.
At the start of the championship, Wales fans would have looked at this fixture with some hope. But after Scotland’s hugely impressive 31-20 win at Murrayfield last weekend to lift the Calcutta Cup, they will now fear a 14th consecutive Six Nations defeat.
That could lead to another relatively poor turnout at the Principality Stadium, with only 57,744 turning up to watch the loss to France last Sunday. That was well down on the usual 70,000+ that Wales have been used to playing in front of in recent years.
Given Wales have lost 23 Tests in their last 25 matches, it is hardly surprising that supporters are losing faith. However, there remains a glimmer of hope as they pushed Scotland hard last year in the narrow 35-29 defeat at Murrayfield. Gregor Townsend’s side were also exceptionally poor on the opening weekend of fixtures when they lost to Italy in Rome.
Scotland will believe that result was simply a blemish and after delivering a brilliant display to beat England, will look to sweep aside Wales and keep their hopes of winning the title alive.
