Benin have made the knockouts for only the second time in their history, courtesy of their first ever AFCON victory in normal time. Their reward is a meeting with North African giants Egypt, many people's favorites for the title. But what if we told you that the Pharoahs' Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush had combined for just one more goal from open play than the Cheetahs?
Despite losing to both DR Congo and Senegal, Yohan Roche's deflected winner against Botswana – the lowest-ranked nation at Africa Cup of Nations 2025/26 – was enough to send Benin through as one of the best third-placed teams.
Egypt, meanwhile, topped Group B with two wins and a draw, but it wasn't plain sailing. Salah and Marmoush have each scored once from open play, with the Liverpool man adding another from the spot, but both of the Premier League stars have been peripheral. And it isn't as if Hossam Hassan has deliberately reined them in for the greater good.
Egypt were dominated by South Africa, albeit after going down to 10 men, and when Hassan opted to rest Salah and Marmoush for their final group game, with progress already assured, they were extremely fortunate to scrape a draw against lowly Angola.
They just haven't got going yet, and that's a worry because over recent years Egypt have developed something of a round of 16 complex. It was at this stage that they were dumped out in 2023 and 2019, having been expected to at least reach the final on both occasions, while Benin stunned Morocco on penalties in their only previous last 16 appearance.
