The 3rd Ashes Test from Adelaide represents the last chance for England to return home with the famous urn in their luggage. Two-nil down with three matches to go, Ben Stokes' side must win out from here but look increasingly bedraggled and devoid of confidence, with Australia determined to put the final nail in the Bazball coffin.

England did put up something of a fight on Day 4 – ensuring they kept the Ashes alive another 24 hours and therefore longer than what would've been the quickest defeat in over 100 years – but these things are relative.

The tourists are chasing a notional target of 435 and will resume on Sunday's fifth and final day on 207-6. They need 228 runs to pull off the most remarkable of wins, Australia require only four wickets.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon, now only second to Shane Warne in the Aussie list of all-time leading wicket takers, took three late wickets in the day to leave the tourists on the brink. England managed only 17 runs in that time as Harry Brook, Zak Crawley and Ben Stokes all succumbed to Lyon.

Brook again gave his wicket away when set, attempting a reverse sweep, while Crawley was tempted into dancing down the track to be stumped after scoring an impressive 85. Earlier in the innings, Pat Cummins had taken three wickets, including his bunny Joe Root yet again.

Josh Tongue took 4-70 with the second new ball first up as the England bowlers performed creditably in the morning.

On Day 5, Sunday, England will face a record run chase at the Adelaide Oval with only Will Jacks and Jamie Smith as recognized batters. An Australia win, and Ashes victory seems certain.

The Ashes Test 3 Q+A

What time does play start in the Australia v England 3rd Test?

Play in the Adelaide Test is scheduled to start at 6:30pm ET (day before) / 11:30pm GMT (day before) / 9:30 am AEST / 10:30am AEDT / 5am IST / 1:30am SAST each day.

What are the teams for the 3rd Ashes test?

Australia: Jake Weatherald, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon.

England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith, Will Jacks, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue.

What is the Australia vs England 3rd Test preview?

The hosts will again start as favorites after back-to-back eight-wicket victories, not least with the news that captain and attack leader Pat Cummins has been passed fit to resume his personal wizardry agains the Poms. The 32-year-old has taken the wicket of England star batter Joe Root 11 times and will combine with Mitchell Starc – 16 wickets this series and a counterattacking 2nd Test 77 with the bat to his name – to cause more heart palpitations in the opposition ranks. Usman Khawaja is also fit again, though whether the top order batter will squeeze back into the XI after Jacob Weatherald and Travis Head's fine form remains to be seen. Nathan Lyon's return at the spin-friendly Oval is a guarantee.

Stokes spoke of Australia being “no country for weak men” after the 2nd Test defeat in Brisbane and has encouraged his side to "show a bit of dog" in the buildup to Adelaide. England must win, and the Oval's smaller boundaries could help their attacking approach, and keep doing so for the rest of the tour to achieve the seemingly impossible – the great Don Bradman's Australia in the 1936/37 Ashes are the only side to come from 2-0 down in Test series to win. The visitors have made one change, with Josh Tongue replacing the struggling Gus Atkinson in the bowling attack, while the pressure will be on Harry Brook after giving his wicket away in both Tests.

Can Stokes & Co keep the Ashes alive heading into Boxing Day?
